A Walk Around Downtown Troy
If you've got a full stomach and twenty minutes to spare after breakfast, downtown Troy is worth the walk.
The city was laid out in 1787 by a group of New England settlers, on a grid modeled after Philadelphia — numbered streets running inland from River Street, which was the original business corridor and still anchors downtown today. A lot of that 19th-century architecture survived: ornate marble-and-steel storefronts, a gray-granite courthouse, and the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall, known for both its façade and its acoustics.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) sits just up the hill and is one of the city's largest employers, which keeps downtown busy well beyond a typical small-city 9-to-5.
It's a genuinely walkable historic district — not a recreated one — and easy to see most of in a single loop. Worth doing on a morning you don't have anywhere else to be.
