Simit Plate and Borek: A Turkish Breakfast Near Troy
Simit is a crisp Turkish sesame bagel, and borek is a flaky Turkish pastry, often filled with spinach and feta. At Mumu's Cafe in Troy, NY you can have both as part of a breakfast plate with eggs, greens and olives, or as a side.
The Simit Plate
The Simit Plate comes with a simit, two eggs, organic mixed greens, tomato, cucumber, cream cheese and olives. If you've never had simit, imagine a bagel that's thinner and crisper, golden-brown and generously coated with toasted sesame seeds. It's tagged vegetarian and halal on our menu, and it's a lighter alternative to a heavier breakfast sandwich.
The Borek Plate
The Borek Plate is built around a spinach and feta borek, served with spring mix, tomatoes, cucumber, two freshly cracked eggs with cheese, and olives. The pastry is crisp and savory, and the eggs balance it out. It's tagged vegetarian and halal as well. A Yelp reviewer wrote that they loved the Borek Plate with a side of baklava and a Turkish coffee.
Roll borek as a side or a snack
If you don't want a full plate, you can order the Roll Borek (Spinach and Feta Cheese) on its own. It's a crispy pastry filled with a savory spinach and feta blend, rolled into a spiral. It also appears under sides, so you can add it to another order. A simit is also available alone as a side, which makes a good snack with coffee.
